We've all had bad days in our lives. Here I wrote one of them down in a vignette. This happened to me on July 21, 2001... just in case you were wondering if it was a true story. Bad Days You wake from a restless sleep. On the edge of your bed he sits. Dad? No answer, no movement. Just a feeling, many feelings. Sadness, pain. Dad? Loss. You're still tired. A tear runs down his face. Feels like a dream. A dream lacking understanding. A cleared throat. Heavy words pour from him, Mom isn't coming home. His voice breaks. Haunting words. You cry yourself to sleep. Again you wake. Wake from a bad dream. Wake to soft sunlight brushing your face. Get out of bed, change into fresh clothes, walk downstairs. All is quiet. Abnormally quiet. He's sitting in the dining room, his head in his hands. One look at his face brings back the nightmare. It wasn't a dream. It was simply the first in a string of bad days. Thanks for any comments.
